Chakra Spotlight: The Sexy Sacral Chakra

Oooooh la la, friends- I am back with another installment of Chakra Spotlight, where I go in depth on the different chakras. We are moving on up the body to the Sacral Chakra, located in your pelvis.

The Sacral Chakra is the pleasure center of the body. This is the Chakra that thrives on pleasure and enjoyment- sounds good, right? But here’s where it gets complicated: in order to have a balanced Sacral Chakra, one must fully embrace intimacy, their sexuality, emotions, and connections.

In today’s society this can get really difficult. Sexuality is both celebrated (think: Victoria’s Secret advertisements) and rejected (think: nasty words like “slut”). Intimacy is a gift. Genuine connection in a world of screens and socializing through them is a treasure.

We are also not encouraged to listen to our emotions. Sometimes it feels like society considers our emotions impractical. But the truth is holding in your emotions can cause long term problems. It’s much better to deal with sadness and anger as they come, observe objectively them as part of a natural cycle (remember: absolutely everyone has bad days and absolutely everyone goes through rough times) and let them go as you’re ready. Let them be like released balloons and allow them to disappear into the sky, never to be seen again.

Problems associated with an imbalanced Sacral Chakra include confusion, creative blocks, mood swings, and trouble relating to others.

So how do we keep an open Sacral Chakra? Pursue genuine connection. Go out for dinner and put your phone away. Have a conversation with a friend or a stranger. Give someone a compliment. Have passionate sex.

As with the Root Chakra, we can use yoga to focus on the Sacral Chakra. Poses that work with the hips and pelvis are good Sacral opening poses. Try Child’s Pose or Dancer’s Pose. 🙂

Meditation and essential oils help, too. At the end of this post you’ll find a list of affirmations you can use to help balance your Sacral Chakra. Essential oils that can be used in relation to opening the chakra include ylang ylang, sandalwood, clary sage, orange and rosewood.

As always, when you feel this chakra is in balance, you can move onto the next one. Next week we’ll shine the spotlight on the Solar Plexus Chakra. Until next time, namasté my friends!
